The carving of wood is considered as an ancient art in which different wooden pieces are painted, shaped and decorated in to different handicraft pieces. This art is present from the era when human beings used to live in deep forests. It is a time consumptive and complexed process. In 18th century it again started to get momentum in India. In India there is also a fashion that it is outside the houses the geometrical patterns are made with using the linen wood. This trend is usually found in Rajasthan, Haryana and Kashmir.

India has been a culturally diverse country because each state shows the different kind of handicraft styles. There are different kind of wood available in different state of India as hardwood and softwood. It reflects the lingual, cultural and religious diversity of India.
