The carving of wood is considered as an ancient art in which different wooden pieces are painted, shaped and decorated in to different handicraft pieces. This art is present from the era when human beings used to live in deep forests. It is a time consumptive and complexed process. In 18th century it again started to get momentum in India. In persia it is also very famous art.
Wood is an important raw material for creating the furniture as well handicraft items. Knife, chisels, brush, hand drills and hammers are used to make wooden handicrafts. Chisel are used to remove the unwanted part of wood. In India, Saharanpur is one city which is very famous in creating the shisham chiseling work and is also called as the home city of wood in India.
In South India this wood carving work is considered very important and many Ramayana and Mahabharata time arts and carved crafts can be seen in the southern cities. Many jewelry items, decorative pieces, paper items and pen holders are also made of wood carving method.
The biggest utility of wood carved material is this that with the passing of time it does not lose its viability. Many northern and southern temples of ancient times are the best examples of this. In India there is also a fashion that it is outside the houses the geometrical patterns are made with using the linen wood. This trend is usually found in Rajasthan, Haryana and Kashmir.
India has been a culturally diverse country because each state shows the different kind of handicraft styles. There are different kind of wood available in different state of India as hardwood and softwood. It reflects the lingual, cultural and religious diversity of India.
